Metsähallitus seeks a new director of game and fisheries

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is seeking a new director of game and fisheries for Metsähallitus. The position will become vacant in August when the current office holder Jukka Bisi retires. You can apply for the position of director of game and fisheries until 23 February at 12 noon.

According to the Finnish law, the director of game and fisheries decides on matters related to hunting and fishing and wilderness supervision in state-owned areas. The director of game and fisheries will decide on hunting and fishing quotas and requests for rectification that citizens submit related to permit decisions.

“The office holder guarantees everyone the opportunity to spend time in the wilderness and, on the other hand, ensures that it takes place in a sustainable manner. The principles of official activities and good governance must be something innate,” says current Director of Game and Fisheries Jukka Bisi.

Spending time in wilderness is becoming more and more popular. Every year, Metsähallitus sells approximately 200,000 hunting and fishing permits for state-owned areas. There would be even more demand, but quotas are imposed to safeguard the future of wilderness. Metsähallitus also collects 280,000 national fisheries management fees on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Every year, the game and fisheries wardens check 10,000 wilderness or outdoor enthusiasts.

All this work is carried out in Metsähallitus’s Wildlife Service Finland unit, which is led by the director of game and fisheries. Wildlife Service Finland currently employs 70 people. Among them are experts in hunting, fishing, communications and wilderness permits as well as game and fisheries wardens. Wildlife Service Finland maintains the Eräluvat.fi service, which has more than half a million registered users.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry emphasises the importance of the director of game and fisheries for Finnish wilderness and sustainable outdoor hobbies.

“This is a vantage point across a very interesting and meaningful set of duties. The director of game and fisheries management must have experience in managing personnel and networks, a strategic view on the development of wilderness matters and the ability to reform activities,” says Erno Järvinen, Forest Counsellor at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
