National Hiking Areas for Outdoor Recreation

There are five national hiking areas that were established by law for outdoor recreation.

National hiking areas are suited for hiking and other outdoor recreation. They offer marked hiking trails, skiing trails and camping sites in great landscapes. Fishing and hunting is usually permitted.

They are all managed by Metsähallitus, Parks & Wildlife Finland. They are also part of the Natura 2000 network, although they are not nature reserves proper.

The Arctic Circle Hiking Area and the Inari Hiking Area were established by Metsähallitus and have the same services as national hiking areas.

Limited commercial forestry is also practised in national hiking areas. Within the management plans we take into consideration both natural values and the needs brought by outdoor recreation and forestry.
