Monitoring and evaluation

Monitoring is a key part of the LIFEline4Fennicus project. Systematic monitoring throughout the project period also helps us detect potential problems and unexpected changes early, so that solutions can be found in time.
A major share of our monitoring resources is dedicated to tracking the reintroduced subpopulations. We will monitor WFR in Lauhanvuori and Seitseminen National Parks, and later also in Tiilikkajärvi National Park, using GPS collars, wildlife cameras, and fieldwork. This will provide information, for example, on calving success and calf survival, animal movements, and causes of mortality.
To support GPS and field monitoring, we will create a photo gallery where anyone interested can upload their own photos from the reintroduction areas. At the same time, we will develop an AI-based tool to help process the growing number of images.
Overall responsibility for monitoring lies with the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke). Metsähallitus Parks & Wildlife Finland will contribute to fieldwork and will manage the wildlife camera data, as well as organize the social impact assessment related to the planned reintroduction in Tiilikkajärvi National Park.
