Information about construction work at Vikaköngäs for visitors to the Arctic Circle Hiking Area

Construction work on a new holiday village began last week at Vikaköngäs in the Arctic Circle Hiking Area.

The aim is to ensure that the construction work causes as little disturbance as possible to hikers and to Metsähallitus partner companies operating in the area with customers. Metsähallitus apologises for the inconvenience caused by the construction work and hopes that everyone moving in the area will exercise caution. According to the current estimate, the work will continue until the end of October.

Agree on road use in advance – an alternative route to the Vikaköngäs suspension bridge has been marked for hikers

The attached map shows the area where extra caution is required. At the moment, the road passing through the middle of the area is closed to all traffic except construction traffic. Partner companies may use the road by arranging access in advance with site manager Vesa Mesilaakso, tel. +358 40 675 8160. We hope that contacts are made well in advance so that construction workers can prepare for other traffic in the area.

A temporary walking route has been marked from the Vikaköngäs parking area to the bridge crossing the river. The sandy road along the shore and the lean-to shelter are also outside the construction area and remain available for use.

The construction work does not affect the use of the rapids, but it makes moving canoes or rafts upstream from the bridge more difficult.

Once the construction work has been completed, the hiking structures and services at Vikaköngäs will again be available for hikers and partner companies as normal.
