IlmastoMänty (ClimatePine)
IlmastoMänty (ClimatePine) – Towards climate resilient silviculture: Regulation of growth rhythms and improving the adaptability of trees is a research project that seeks solutions to managing pine forests in changing conditions. The project will be carried out in 2026–2029.
In this collaborative project, the Natural Resources Institute Finland’s research expertise will be combined with Metsähallitus’ extensive practical datasets as well as the viewpoint of operative forestry.
The project will study the adaptability of the pine and seek ways to improve the climate resilience of forests. Among other things, the study will focus on genetic modification of trees’ growth cycles and stress tolerance as well as their ability to adapt to various growth conditions.
It will also compare adaptation to climate change in forests planted with natural and selectively bred seed and saplings in Northern Finland as well as assess in practical terms the growth of forest stands established with selectively bred cultivation material on state-owned lands.
The results of the project will support society as a whole by providing information on how forests can be managed as the climate changes. The results can be used to make decisions about the forest regeneration stage and to promote forest growth and carbon sequestration. This way, the research will serve not only forestry but also climate action and society’s preparedness for future changes in a broader sense.
