Added value for state-owned lands and waters
Property Development is responsible for zoning matters, the procurement, sale and leasing of real estate properties, and project and development activities involving land and water areas. Property Development also sets aside and develops state-owned areas for wind power production needs and oversees extraction activities on state-owned land.
Property Development sustainably generates value added for state-owned areas by zoning plots for a variety of purposes, such as waterfront and residential plots as well as holiday and commercial plots for tourism destinations. Metsähallitus lands and their zoning have a significant impact on the local economy and vitality of sparsely populated areas. Metsähallitus' zoning activities are steered by the zoning principles set by the state owner. These principles give special attention to natural, recreation and cultural values, everyman's rights and the social obligations related to preserving reindeer husbandry and Sámi culture.
Metsähallitus Property Development also plays an important social role. We ensure overall national security in the use of state-owned areas where national defence and border control are concerned. Property Development is responsible for procuring training areas needed by the Finnish Defence Forces in accordance with the framework agreement between Metsähallitus and the Finnish Defence Forces. There is also an equivalent agreement with the Finnish Border Guard.
