Development of Sustainable Nature Tourism in the Unesco biosphere areas of the archipelago and in the western regions of Estonia 2002-2004

The popularity of tourism, and nature tourism in particular, is increasing. The archipelago is an Cowslip. Photo:Jouko Högmanderinteresting area, both on a national and on an international scale. The objective of this project is to promote nature tourism within the biosphere areas of the archipelago and of the western regions of Estonia. The aim is to find an economically, socially, ecologically and culturally sustainable model for nature tourism.

The Natural Heritages Service of Metsähallitus, Southern Finland, governs the project together with Hiiu Maavalitsus in Estonia. The project is a joint venture between the countries' biosphere areas. In the archipelago, the development is focused on the biospheric core area, i.e. the Archipelago National Park. In Estonia, the focus lies on the future Kopu National Park in the biosphere area of western Estonia. The project began in July this year and will continue until December 30, 2004.
