Restoration and nature management of protected areas within the METSO programme

The objective of the restoration and nature management is to safeguard and increase biodiversity in protected areas. The restoration measures are mainly aimed at forests and wooded mires and are meant to be one-off actions.

Continuous nature management is performed at regular intervals in, for example, herb-rich forests, hardwood forests, the habitats of certain endangered species such as the white-backed woodpecker and in esker forests. Nature management measures such as grazing and mowing are performed annually in wooded heritage biotopes.

The objectives for 2009–2016 are

  • to restore 13,000 hectares of forests and forested mires,
  • to manage 4,000 ha of herb-rich forests, xerothermic habitats in esker forests and other habitats, and
  • to include 1,500 ha of wooded heritage biotopes in the management programme.
Additionally, comprehensive data is being collected on the ecological and economic impacts of the actions through the monitoring of restoration and nature management.
