Information from Different Sources

Information is updated regularly according to operations carried out in an area. Environmental data, for example, is supplemented continuously with field surveys.




Up-to-date information about natural resources is obtained from:

The geographical information used at Metsähallitus, which is:

  • ortho-adjusted aerial photos
  • map materials and databases of the National Land Survey of Finland
  • material from the Finnish Environment Institute on vegetation zones, Natura areas, groundwater areas and conservation programme areas, among others
  • the Geological Survey of Finland’s data on special areas
  • the TAXON register’s national data on sightings, sighting sites and occurrence of threatened species
  • The Finnish Forest Research Institute’s sample plot register
  • other freely accessible geographical information data (e.g. The Finnish Ministry of Trade and Industry’s mining concessions and claims register)

Geographical information maintained by Metsähallitus, including:

  • landscape patterns used for forestry or patterns of various nature types, and sites of special importance as regards nature, landscape, game or nature-based economies, and the related characteristics, drawn up on the basis of aerial photos, GPS, basic maps and real estate maps
  • Metsähallitus’ own roads and shared roads, plus the bridges linking Metsähallitus’ roads
  • Metsähallitus’ structures, routes and buildings
  • the real estate, land parcels and leased land, including their use, that are under Metsähallitus’ administration

 

Current information about the requirements of the surrounding community and customers is obtained from/by:

    • visitor surveys and counts
    • feedback systems
    • discussions with customers
    • participatory planning
    • specific surveys
