Threatened Animals

Metsähallitus is responsible for conservation, management and monitoring species on the areas which it manages. In addition, Metsähallitus has the national responsibility of promoting conservation and organising monitoring of certain threatened species, or species which are mentioned in the Habitats directive.

The animal species which Metsähallitus has extended responsibility for:

Mammals (2 species)

Birds (4 species)

  • Golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos)
  • Peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus)
  • Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus)
  • White-backed woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos)

Beetles (4 species)

  • Pytho kolwensis
  • Agathidium pulchellum
  • Boros schneideri
  • Flat bark beetle (Cucujus cinnaberinus )

Butterflies (2 species)

  • Baton blue (Scolitantides vicrama )
  • Silver-spotted skipper (Hesperia comma ssp. catena )

Grasshoppers (1 species)

  • Speckled grasshopper (Bryodema tuberculatum) *

In addition, Metsähallitus is responsible for monitoring the White-tailed sea eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) in the provences of Oulu and Lapland, and monitoring the Lesser White-fronted goose (Anser erythropus ) in the Northern Lapland.
