Monitoring Species
In species monitoring, attention is paid to the distribution, abundance or viability of a single species or a group of species, and related factors.
Metsähallitus has three types of species monitoring:
- Metsähallitus is responsible for monitoring species on the areas which it manages. In addition, it is nationally responsible for monitoring a number of threatened species or species which are protected under the EU Habitats Directive or the Birds Directive.
- Metsähallitus also monitors locally certain species or groups of species for management planning purposes.
- Some of the monitoring aims at finding out what kind of effect the management, restoration or use of the area have on the species locally - and then possibly generalising the results.
If possible, Metsähallitus cooperates with nature enthusiats in monitoring species. In Golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), Peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) and Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus ) monitoring, for example, the bird ringers work contribution is remarkable. In the Eastern Gulf of Finland National Park, too, the bird monitoring has been carried out for years by volunteers.
