National Hiking Areas

Map of national hiking areas © Metsähallitus 2005

The dots on the map mark Napapiiri Hiking Area which was
established by Metsähallitus and Inari Hiking area which is
in the process of being established.

There are seven national hiking areas that were established by the government by law. All seven are managed by Metsähallitus. These are also part of the Natura 2000 network, although they are not protected areas.

The Arctic Circle Hiking Area was established by Metsähallitus and has the same services as national hiking areas. An eighth national hiking area is in the process of being established in Inari.

National hiking areas are versatile areas suited for hiking and other outdoor recreation in the middle of natural landscape.

Limited commercial forestry is also practised in national hiking areas, while taking into consideration nature’s worth and the needs brought by outdoor recreation.

There are marked hiking trails, skiing trails, nature trails, camping sites and lean-to shelters within hiking areas. Many areas also have a visitor centre or a tourist centre or rental cabins.

Fishing and hunting is usually permitted in hiking areas.
