Wood as a Full-service Concept
Metsähallitus Forestry’s main products are pulpwood and sawlogs. They are always delivered as a complete service, and to the customer’s dimensional and quality requirements. Most of the pulpwood and sawlogs are primarily sold under long-term agreements, but suitable lots are also available to occasional customers.
Metsähallitus sells about 6 million cubic metres of timber annually. This is about 6 percent of the timber volume required by the Finnish forest industry. The biggest customers are big Finnish forest industry companies that produce pulp, paper and sawn goods.
Some 60 percent of the total timber volume sold by Metsähallitus is pulpwood while the rest are sawlogs. In addition, stumps, logging residues and small-diameter wood are sold to power plants. Metsähallitus supplies wood to some 100 different delivery points around Finland. A small amount of wood is also delivered to Sweden. Metsähallitus does not have its own wood processing operation.
Metsähallitus’s forests are certified under the international PEFC system. The certificate is a sign that the wood raw material was grown in compliance with sound forest management criteria. In addition to forest certification, Metsähallitus has committed to complying with the requirements of the chain-of-custody management of wood, which makes it possible to reliably trace the wood raw material coming from certified forests all the way back to the source forest. The chain-of-custody management certificate granted to Metsähallitus complies with the standard PEFC Technical Documentation 2004, Annex 4.
