Metsähallitus has an environmental management system certified in accordance with ISO 14001 standard and this environmental policy is based on the requirements laid out in the standard.
The environmental policy covers all areas of Metsähallitus activities.
We develop our activities on the basis of shared values, strategy and responsibility. Responsibility also means that each Metsähallitus employee must, as part of their own work, continuously improve the environment. Ensuring that there is no conflict between ecological, economic, social and cultural sustainability is the principle guiding all our work. We follow developments in environmental matters and keep up to date with environmental trends, and work to ensure that Metsähallitus can lead the way in sustainable development.
Compliance with the law and other regulations is the basis for all Metsähallitus activities and it provides the minimum level for what we do. We promote the implementation of the international environmental agreements that Finland has acceded to. Responsibility is key to our activities and developing them. We observe the precautionary principle when taking measures with environmental impacts. We support initiatives that help to ensure more responsible use of natural resources. We promote the development and introduction of environmentally friendly practices and technologies. In forestry, we observe PEFC forest certification standards and our own environmental guidelines.
Each year, we set strategic environmental goals, which, in accordance with the ISO standard, provide the basis for the development of environmental matters in Metsähallitus as a whole and in individual business units. The strategic environmental goals of Metsähallitus are stated at the end of this policy.
The key environmental aspects of Metsähallitus activities concern the use of natural resources, property development, maintaining of biodiversity, water protection and landscape management. We evaluate the environmental aspects and risks in connection with our activities each year. To manage environmental impacts and to constantly improve our environmental management practices, we prepare environmental objectives, guidelines and monitoring methods. We work to reconcile the expectations on state-owned land and water areas and develop our activities in an interactive manner in cooperation with our stakeholders, customers, other partners and local residents. The environmental knowledge and skills of our personnel and contractual entrepreneurs are developed and monitored on a regular basis.
Roles and responsibilities
Metsähallitus Board of Directors is responsible for the organisation of environmental management and for integrating it into the overall activities. The Board of Directors approves the environmental policy of Metsähallitus and decides on the extent of environmental system certifications.
The Director General is responsible for environmental management in Metsähallitus and for ensuring that the decisions on environmental matters are properly implemented.
Metsähallitus Senior Management reviews the functioning of the environmental management system, prepares the environmental policy, drafts the environmental objectives for the following year and submits the draft to the Board of Directors for consideration.
Each business unit is responsible for the environmental matters relevant to its own activities.
Metsähallitus environmental groups prepare the matters concerning the environmental management system for the Board of Directors and Senior Management and the management groups of individual business units, and ensure the proper coordination, monitoring and development of system implementation. The Metsähallitus environmental group is chaired by the Director of Development who presents the matters to Senior Management and the Board of Directors. The environmental group works in close cooperation with the Metsähallitus corporate responsibility group.
Each Metsähallitus employee is expected to implement this environmental policy and the environmental management guidelines in their own work.
Reporting procedure and developing the environmental management system
Metsähallitus is constantly developing its environmental management system in order the improve the level of environmental protection. Metsähallitus monitors, measures, analyses and assesses the level of its own environmental protection practices and evaluates the functioning of its environmental management system through internal and external audits and reviews. Metsähallitus Senior Management reviews the environmental management system each year in order to ensure that it is appropriate, and effective and meets the needs of Metsähallitus. The review produced by Metsähallitus is based on the reviews of individual business units. We openly communicate the economic, ecological and social results of our activities, their environmental impacts and the changes in the level of environmental protection.
