Natural Habitat Types and Species - Essential Parts of Biodiversity
Conservation of species and natural habitat types is vital in protecting biodiversity - just as well in the nature conservation work carried out by Metsähallitus. Fundamental knowledge on many things is necessary for this work to succeed.
Metsähallitus is conducting inventories to collect the basic information on the natural habitat types found in the protected areas which it manages. It makes inventories on the species in the areas, and monitors the changes in species and natural habitat types.
Where it is necessary, Metsähallitus manages and restores areas to conserve species or the natural habitat types. Metsähallitus is also nationally responsible for protecting certain species.
Most part of Finland’s Natura 2000 Network is managed by Metsähallitus, which means that Metsähallitus has a great responsibility for maintaining the favourable conservation status of the natural habitat types and species included in the Habitats and the Birds Directives.
